How many leadership books have you read? Have you spent hours undertaken leadership training? Still facing challenges implementing your plan? I often hear from leaders that they’ve learned what to do, know a lot of theory, have the relevant experience but something still isn’t working. We’re naturally drawn to focus on things we have experience of being good at and want to spend the most time in our ‘comfort zone’. The challenge comes in balancing security needs when operating in our ‘stretch zone’, whilst still having enough energy to deliver peak performance and remain engaged. As a result, when ‘stretched’ there can be a tendency to overplay what we’re good at which in turn can impact on performance. For example, someone who is results driven, may be so focused on achieving their goals they may overlook the full consequences of their actions and things can go wrong. This can have huge implications for leaders, teams and ultimately business performance.
